•
Ensure that your M5900 Series portable data terminal is connected to your computer at this time.
•

IMPORTANT: Check your Decoder Version. Starting at the main menu on your M5900 terminal, select "Diagnostics".
In the "Diagnostics" menu, select "Firmware Version".
On the "Firmware Version" screen, locate your Decoder Version. The red arrow below indicates where you can find the Decoder Version listed on the "Firmware Version" screen.
If your Decoder Version is 2.00 or greater, you can download Firmware Version 1.2.x or higher. If your Decoder Version is less than 2.00, the current version available to your terminal is 1.1.8.
The M5900 has a built-in function which allows updating of the firmware. The files will be transferred to the M5900 unit over the serial or USB cables. The AML programming utility will be required which is included in the Program Generator package.
To upgrade the M5900 firmware you must force a cold boot.
M5900 Cold Start Boot When the M5900 is turned on for the first time, it performs a cold boot. The cold boot process loads the operating system into the M5900's virtual memory so it will execute as fast as possible. This process only takes a few seconds. You should program the current date and time into the real time clock of the M5900 terminal. This allows programs to time and date stamp information as it is collected.
In order to force a cold boot upon restart of the terminal, press and hold the [Power] and [SCAN] buttons simultaneously for at least 5 seconds. The red LED will flash rapidly and the unit will chirp and power down. The unit will cold boot when powered on the next time. The cold boot process will terminate any active program.
Updating the Firmware When turning the unit back on for the first time press and hold the [Menu], [Space] and [Shift] key simultaneously then press the power key. Have a USB or RS-232 cable connected between the M5900 and the PC before doing this. Once the AML M5900 splash screen appears release all the keys. The unit should now show the "Firmware Update" screen.
At this time, run the M5900 Program Generator and select "New Program". From there, select Tools -> "Send other data files to the M5900".
